1ST SGT ARTHUR NICHLAS U.S. Marine Corps, Retired Arthur Louis Nichlas, 87, of Las Vegas, passed away Dec. 21, 2013. Arthur was born Oct. 11, 1926 in Yonkers, N.Y., but considered Wyoming, Pa. his home where he played football for Wyoming Seminary and taught Judo and Karate. A veteran of World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars, Arthur proudly served our country for 26 years on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and four years in the Reserves. Serving in Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division, 1st Sergeant Nichlas received the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat "V" from President Nixon. His pride and dedication to the Marine Corps remained steadfast. After his retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1972, he moved his family to Phoenix, where he returned to school and graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree and master's degree in education. After a successful teaching career in elementary and high school, he became certified by the State of Arizona as a professional administrator and served as dean of students at Deer Valley High School in Phoenix. Arthur belonged to St. John Greek Orthodox Church in Las Vegas and served as a brother in the Masons for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leola Mae Hreha of Wilkes Barre, Pa., whom he married in 1952. His mother and father, Leonidas and Alexandra Nicolakakos; his stepfather, James Evenidis; brother, James of Oklahoma; sisters, Pauline, Kalope and Stella. Arthur is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ann L. Spann and Chris Spann of Reno; his daughter, Diane Barnett of Las Vegas; and his grandson, Christopher Spann of Phoenix.
