Arlene Kretschmer Friel Obituary
ARLENE FRIEL Arlene Kretschmer Friel, 74, of Tonopah, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 15, 2013. Born July 23, 1939 in Rio Tinto, at the age of 10, Arlene moved with her family to Tonopah where she spent the remainder of her life. In 1957, Arlene graduated from Tonopah High School, where she was also the class valedictorian. Shortly thereafter, in 1958, she married the love of her life Joe Friel and proceeded to build a family and home within the Tonopah community. Together, Joe and Arlene raised four children, Jim, Tom, Karen and John. As a cub scout den mother, a girl scout leader, a catechism teacher or just her ever-present involvement at hundreds of her children's sporting events, Arlene showed true passion as a wife and mother. The love, security and selfless sacrifices she gave to her family taught her children a true sense of commitment and love that is carried in their hearts today and passed along to their own families. Arlene's 25-year professional career, in addition to being a full-time wife and mother, included serving as the Administrator of Nye General Hospital and as the long-time manager of the local Western Auto/Radio Shack store. In addition to her devotion to her family, Arlene was also passionate about her community and her faith. She spent countless hours volunteering at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, served as the first female president of the Tonopah Rotary Club, and was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for over 50 years. Arlene was a force to be reckoned with, had a sharp wit and impish sense of humor. She touched her family, friends and community deeply and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Joe (1992). She is survived by her four children, Jim Friel (Kim), Tom Friel (Shannon), Karen Friel, and John Friel (Dana). She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Anthony, Andrew, Alli, Taylor, Connor, Zach, Bailey and Delaney;, and as well by her three brothers, Bill Kretschmer, Ray Kretschmer and Ed Kretschmer; and her sister and best friend.
