1925 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
RDML DELBERT BARTH U.S.P.H.S. (retired) Rear Admiral Delbert Sylvester Barth, assistant surgeon general, USPHS (ret.) was born July 1925, in Lawrenceburg, Ind., and grew up on a farm near Upper Sandusky, Ohio. He was the valedictorian of his high school graduating class and in 1943 headed for the West Point Military Academy, graduating in military engineering in 1946, after three years. "Del" went on to obtain an M.S. in nuclear physics in 1952 and a Ph.D. in biophysics in 1962 from Ohio State University. During his distinguished 28-year government career, Del served in the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Public Health Service, where he received the Distinguished Service Medal. Del also served in U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare, where he was promoted to assistant surgeon general. Del finished his career doing what he loved most teaching biophysics as a professor at UNLV. Del was preceded in death by his eldest son, Del Jr.; and eldest daughter, Deborah Barth Webb. Del is survived by his beloved wife, of 67 years, Lucille; son, Christopher; daughter, Diana Barth Gaines; and grandsons, Steven, Scott, Daniel and Shannon. Memorial services will be at noon Saturday, March 29, at St. Thomas More Church, 130 N. Pecos Road, Henderson.
