Don L. Slagle Obituary
DON SLAGLE Don L. Slagle, 82, of Las Vegas, passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013. He was born March 31, 1931 in Monroe, N.C., as an only child to William Arthur and Rosa Belle Slagle. Most of his schooling was "living life to the fullest." He was a sponge diver at the age of 12 in Tarpon Springs, Fla., and at the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Navy. He was married and had two daughters, Susan Faye and Rose Marie. During his second marriage he adopted two sons, G. John and Steve. After his U.S. Navy career, he was a miner in California and spent 30 years at the Nevada Test Site as a master mechanic. Don had his own ornamental iron works, as well as being the owner and operator of D&G Mobile Hydraulics. He loved the outdoors and hunting trips, too numerous to mention. His pride was his six-point bull elk. Next was racing, first motorcycles and received several honors and trophies. And then he met off road-racers, but before that he had "four-wheeler fever" and taught Virginia at 65 how to drive and join him. His car racing was mostly in the category of having fun, no big wins, but the enjoyment of friends in preparing for the races. As a member of S.N.O.R.E. and S.C.O.R.E., he got Virginia involved. He loved people, parties, his dogs and lived each day to the fullest. Don was survived by his loving companion, of 45 years, Virginia Britton; four children, Susan Graf Davis, Rose Marie (Kirk) Neuroth, G. John (Christine) Slagle and Steve (Charlotte) Slagle; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be noon-3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, with funeral services following, both at Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89146. "Peaceful journey and wait for us. "
