Marnita Anne Swarm "Marnie" Magner Obituary
MARNIE MAGNER Marnita Anne "Marnie" Swarm Magner, of Las Vegas, passed away Dec. 22, 2013. She was born Aug. 19, 1942, in Ft. Worth, Texas, to H. Myron and Anita J. Swarm. She was raised in Everett and Seattle, Wash. and McMinnville, Ore. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle, where she was a Golden Spur, the University of Washington with a B.S. in numerical analysis and UNLV with a M.S. in computer science and electrical engineering. She also attended the University of Colorado Denver and the University of Alabama Huntsville. She worked at the Boeing Company, Seattle, on the SST, 747 and 737 engine tests, for Cubic Corporation on the ACMI and Red Flag computer simulations, and at EG&G, later Bechtel Nevada, at the Remote Sensing Lab. She was active in many organizations usually taking a leadership role. She was a member of the Washington Alpine Club, where she climbed many of the Washington state peaks and skied. She belonged to PEO, Chapter P and was selected to be in the PEO book, Stars of Nevada, member of IEEE, founding president of the Southern Nevada Society of Women Engineers, professional advisor to the UNLV student chapter of SWE, Fiber Arts Guild, Saint Andrews Society of Southern Nevada (Scottish), Nevada State Commissioner for the Elliot Clan, Daughter of the Year for the Daughters of Erin, Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Community Council Women of Achievement in Science, founding Coordinator for Singles for the Desert Southwest Conference, United Methodist Church, and a 35-year member of Trinity United Methodist Church. As a single parent for 11 years, she shuffled her children to scouts, music activities, soccer and little league, as well as working full-time and going to school. As a spiritual woman, she tried to keep God foremost in her life. At Trinity UMC, she met her true love and married Gerald Magner, June 1, 1990, blending their families under one roof. Her hobbies included sewing, weaving, reading, travel, playing her harp, piano and clarinet, baking, playing with the grandchildren and family gatherings. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Park. She is survived by brothers, Robert M. (Arlene) Swarm and David (Jean Anne) Swarm, of Seattle; her husband, Gerald of Las Vegas; three children, Kathy (Paul) Novack, of Covington, Wash., June (Brian) Light and Sean Sheehan of Las Vegas; three stepchildren, Sunni (Will) Seifert of Las Vegas, Danny (Jenny) Magner of Greenville, S.C., and Shane Magner of Boston; eight grandchildren, Krystianne, Jonathan, and Tristan Novack, Edward, Orion and Brianna Light, and Aspen and Will Seifert. Marnie will be remembered as taking life's hardships in stride and overcoming them with humor. She is known for making a positive difference. Services were previously held.
