SHIRLEY SWANSON Obituary
SHIRLEY SWANSON The younger daughter of one of Las Vegas's pioneering families, Shirley Ferron Swanson, passed away, in Las Vegas, July 17, 2013, of natural causes, at age 93. Shirley was born in Las Vegas, Dec. 15, 1919, and was a graduate of Las Vegas High School. She attended the University of Nevada, Reno before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles because UNR only offered the first two years of study at that time. Following her graduation from UCLA in 1940 at age 20, she went to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Truman Commission. This is where she met her husband, Bernard J. Swanson. They were married in San Diego in 1942 and, after his service in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific, moved to Las Vegas in 1946, where they raised their family. In 1965, she became administrative assistant for the chemistry department at the newly-created local university, Nevada Southern (now UNLV), retiring in the late 1970's. She was a founding member of, and continually active volunteer for, the Service League of Las Vegas, which became the Junior League of Las Vegas in 1971. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ruth Ferron; her sister, Barbara Ferron Doyle; and her husband, Bernard J. Swanson. She is survived by her sons, Larry Swanson of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and David Swanson and Tim Swanson of Las Vegas; and three grandchildren, Reid Swanson of Santa Cruz, Calif., Dean Swanson of Seattle, and Heather Swanson of Las Vegas. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at Christ Church Episcopal, 2000 S. Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89104. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Junior League of Las Vegas in memory of Shirley Ferron Swanson.
