CDR ROBERT DOWNING U.S. Navy
, Retired Robert Chase Downing, 91, a resident of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Tuesday, Dec. 10. Robert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mason W. K. Downing, was born in Lawrence, Mass., Oct. 29, 1922. After graduating high school, he briefly attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Bentley School in Boston, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in November 1942. Robert was a career Naval aviator, a veteran of World War II
and the Korean War
. During the course of his career, he was awarded numerous medals and citations for his airmanship and courageous devotion to duty in, at times, the harshest of conditions. He served as a squadron commanding officer, flight operations officer (Air Boss) aboard the USS Valley Forge, and the Naval Bureau of Weapons representative to Douglass Aircraft. He retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of commander, and continued a career with Douglass Aircraft until full retirement. Robert was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Mason; and sister, Blanche. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his son, Keith; daughter-in-law, Susan; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services are private. Interment is pending at the Court of Hope at Bunkers Eden Vale, 1216 Las Vegas Blvd. N.
