STANLEY HUGHES Sr.

TSGT. STANLEY HUGHES SR. U.S. Air Force, Retired Stanley Wade "Stan" Hughes Sr., 70, of Spokane, passed away April 18, 2013. Stan was born in Dunbar, Pa., one of nine children, to Sessel and Margaret Hughes. He graduated high school and joined the U.S. Air Force in August 1960, until his retirement in September 1980. In April 1981, he joined the Department of Defense and worked another 22 years for the U.S. military. During his active duty years, Stan was stationed in England three times, Thailand and the Philippines, as well as several bases stateside, ending his career in Las Vegas. In June 1960, while stationed at Fairchild AFB, Washington, he met and married Karen Cornell, after a whirlwind three-month courtship. They were married over 40 years. They had four sons, Michael, Stanley Jr., Kenneth and Geoffrey Hughes. Karen passed away in February 2005 and Stan relocated to Spokane. He married Laura McCammon in May 2007. Stan spent much of his free time coaching or refereeing the boy's various sports teams. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and playing Texas Hold 'em as much as three times a week. He was a life-time member of the Washington VFW. Stan is survived by his wife, Laura; his four sons; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother, Sturge Hughes of Dunbar; and sister, Vera DiLoreto of Federal Way, Wash.
