VERDI HOOPER Verdi Hooper passed away peacefully Feb. 19, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was a resident of Las Vegas for 47 years. Verdi was born Verdabelle Pross, in Iowa, to Marie and James William Pross in 1923. Her family soon moved to the beaches of southern California where she graduated from Venice High School. In 1949, she married Jack Hooper in Los Angeles where they continued to live and raise their two children. Verdi was a member of the order of the Eastern Star of West Los Angeles and was a consummate homemaker. She enjoyed all forms of the needle arts, knitting, quilting, needlepoint, winning numerous awards and ribbons for her work. She loved gardening, animals and reading, especially poetry. In 1966, the family moved to Las Vegas where she grew to love the beauty of the desert. Jack passed away in 1983. In her later years, she divided her time between homes in Las Vegas, Star Valley, Wyo., and Cedar City, Utah where she enjoyed her hobbies and close friends. Verdi was preceded in death by her brother, James Pross, during World War II; brother, Jack Pross of New Jersey; and her husband, Jack Hooper in 1983. She is survived by her children, Steve Hooper (Donellda) of Henderson and Lynn Buchanan of Las Vegas; sister, Betty Hodges of California; sister-in-law, Merrilee Pross of New Jersey; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. The family gives everyone that helped Verdi enjoy her final years their deepest gratitude. She requested a private service with immediate family members in Las Vegas.
