VERN CHRISTENSEN

VERN CHRISTENSEN Vern J. Christensen passed away Jan. 8, 2014. He was born July 16, 1924, in Salt Lake City, to Marcus J. Christensen and Hazel Johnson. He was raised in Milford, Utah during the 1930's and moved to Las Vegas in 1939, where he graduated Las Vegas High School in 1942. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Philippines during World War II. In 1947, he married Doris Mae Rowe (deceased 2013) in the St. George Temple. They were married 66 years. They were the parents of five children, David, Julia Smith (deceased), Paul, Karen Slade and Joan Baldwin. They also had 22 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren. His three brothers, Don, Carl and Paul, survive him. Vern had a 30-year career in the family business, M. J. Christensen Jewelers. Later, he partnered in developing Nevada Pic-a-Part and Silver Dollar Recycling. Vern was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Perpetual Education Fund (pef.lds.org) of the church. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd. There will be a second visitation from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, with services following, both at the LDS Chapel, 3400 W. Charleston Blvd.
