YOSHIO "EARL" OKINAKA(1934 - 2017)

YOSHIO "EARL" OKINAKA Yoshio "Earl" Okinaka, 83, of Henderson, passed away October 1, 2017, in Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by his brother, Masa Okinaka of Hilo, Hawaii. Earl was born August 27, 1934, in Hilo, Hawaii, to Hitoshi and Haruko Okinaka. He graduated Hilo High School in 1952 and soon thereafter joined the U.S. Army National Guard of Hawaii and then the U.S. Navy, where he served aboard the U.S.S. Savage. He later married Setsuko, who was a dancer with the Tokyo Holiday (a lounge show) in 1969. He worked as a draftsman at the Nevada Test Site and Johnston Island and as a manager for Showa Pearl and a golf course and restaurant. He was a pioneer and longtime member of the SGI-USA for almost 50 years including about 15 years when he served and was well-known as "Honbucho." Earl is survived by his wife, Setsuko Okinaka; his sons, George Okinaka of Henderson, and Daniel Okinaka of Tokyo, Japan; his grandsons, Alex Okinaka of Puyallup, Washington, and Jin Okinaka of Tokyo, Japan; and three brothers and one sister of Hawaii. Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, October 8, at SGI-USA, 2725 W. Charleston Blvd., with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Earl's life.
