CHARLES LEHR Charles F. "Chuck" Lehr, 90, a 16-year resident of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully Feb. 15, 2013. He was born Nov. 8, 1922 in Chicago to the late Revered and Mrs. C. F. Lehr, but spent most of his life in Iowa. He received both a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service in World War II in the European theater between 1942 and 1944. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA (1949) and an MA (1950) in instrumental music. He went on to teach in Grundy Center, Iowa, where he met his future wife, Jan, who also taught there. "Lehr the Bear" was loved by his students and both his marching and concert bands delighted the community for 32 years. In 1982, he retired from teaching. Then he and Jan moved, first to Mesa, Ariz., and later to Las Vegas, where the golf courses are green year-round. In both areas, Chuck enthusiastically continued sharing his musical talents, playing trombone in various swing bands in Arizona and with "The Continentals" in Las Vegas. In addition, numerous hours were spent with his many friends around the cribbage board or bridge table. Charles was preceded in death by his siblings, Ellen, Mildred and Stanley; and nephew, Tim Stevens. Chuck will be greatly missed by his loving wife, of 55 years, Jan. Other survivors include his in-laws, Joan and John Bouslog and Phil Bauer; as well as many nieces and nephews. At Chuck's request, no public services will be held, but private memorial services will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Grundy Center (IA) Instrumental Music Program.
