COL. CHARLES LEMERE U.S. Army, Retired It is with heavy hearts that the immediate and extended family of Col. Charles "Chuck" LeMere, 77, of Las Vegas, announce that he has been welcomed into the presence of our awesome God Sept. 2, 2012. He died with dignity and grace. Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Roy Alfred LeMere; mother, Lucie K. (Bednar) LeMere; and former wife, Kathleen (Clancy) LeMere. Chuck was born in Wabasha, Minn., May 8, 1935. He was an exceptionally charismatic man of vision, who leaves a legacy of integrity, leadership and caring. Chuck was a proud and patriotic man who was loved by many and will be missed by all. He served his country honorably for two tours in the Vietnam War as well as in the U.S. Army service for 30 years. All who crossed his path knew what a generous and genuine person he was. Always putting others' needs before his. He was a man among men. Chuck loved a party. He always had a soft spot in his heart for the "Ladies of the Towne Club." He hosted the "Annual LeMere Croquet Party" for 13 years at his home for his many friends. As a young man, Chuck graduated from Cretin Military High School in St. Paul, Minn. He went on to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1958 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Signal Corps. He held a master of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Arizona. His military education includes Basic Officer Course and the Signal Advanced Officer Course, the U.S. Army Command and Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. His early company grade assignments were with the Signal Corps in Fort Carson, Colo., Hawaii, and Vietnam. Later in his career, he served in Washington, D.C. with the U.S. Army Material Command and the Department of the Army. His second Vietnam tour was with the Defense Communications Agency. In 1973, he commanded the 121st Signal Battalion in Ft. Riley, Kan. He completed his distinguished Army career as deputy director, Army Countermeasure Center, Adelphi, Md. His awards and decorations from his military career include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Technician Service Medal, Vietnam Signal Badge, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbons (1), Overseas Service Bars (4), Parachutist Badge and General Staff Identification Badge. After serving in the U.S. military, Chuck engaged in industry for a short time. Chuck's first employment was an executive with Recon Optical in Torrance, Calf. Chuck's second employment after his military career was at Chapman University in Orange County, Calif., where he was professor of computer science and math. Chuck was a loving presence in the life of his family. He was an unlimited source of strength and courage to them. He loved each of them unconditionally. An officer and a gentle man, Chuck is survived by his loving wife, of 27 years, Joan; brother, John R. LeMere of Washington, D.C.; children, Luke LeMere of Charleston, S.C., Kathryn LeMere (Andy Harrington) of Louisville, Colo., Kim Olson of Lake Elsinore, Calif., and beloved Aida (Tim) Nguyen of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, Alexandra LeMere, Veronica LeMere, Suri Gadelkarim, Simon Harrington and Lucie Harrington; and great-grandchildren, Julian Nguyen, Rachel Nguyen, Mailan Nguyen, Ti Alde Nguyen and Charlotte Nguyen. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. "He was the wind beneath my wings."
