1942 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
DANIEL LYONS It is with great sadness that his family and the close friends of Daniel Joe Lyons announce his passing Thursday, August 24, 2017, at the age of 74 years. He was preceded in death by parents, Clair Ernest Lyons and Theo Airetta Young. Dan will be lovingly missed by his wife, of 25 years, Jackie; stepdaughters, Juli and Lisa Shapiro; and stepgranddaughter, Sydney Papenheim. Dan was born November 17, 1942, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and was a 56-year resident of Las Vegas. Dan was a professor at the College of Southern Nevada for 30 years and conferred Professor Emeritus after retirement. He served as CSN faculty senator for five years, was a course author, three-time nominee for outstanding CSN faculty member where he enthusiastically promoted and directed technological improvements throughout his tenure. Dan's community involvement and supports included the Nevada State Soccer Board, managing the election campaign for Senator Jack Regan, president of the Glen Heather Estates Homeowners Association, the Las Vegas Strip Kiwanis Club, American Heart Association, Griffith Methodist Church, Demolay youth groups and Jack Dailey Elementary School. For these and many other efforts Dan was presented with the City of Las Vegas Certificate of Appreciation for 14 years of Community Service and recognized in the 1995 "Who's Who in the West." Among his other accomplishments are recipient of the R.V. Memorial College Scholarship while attending Rochester Institute of Technology, Production Manager for Milton Standard Publishing Company, Graphic Arts Manager for the City of Las Vegas, Las Vegas Review-Journal Business Manager, Coordinator to Donald W. Reynolds, Business Manager for Don Rey West's 21 publishing companies, Production Design Consultant for San Juan Puerto Rico El Nuevo Dia newspaper and he was the published author of two editions of the Prentice Hall Dictionary of Graphic Communications. Dan was a member of the Masonic Oasis Lodge #31, Boulder City Lodge #37, Las Vegas Scottish Rite and Zelzah Shrine Temple. Through these endeavors, Dan established two Demolay youth groups, was Chair of Nevada State Conclave, Member of Demolay Legion of Honor, and founder of the Robert Neil Parruli Memorial Court of Chevaliers. Dan could frequently be seen traversing the city in his red convertible Thunderbird from which he generated thousands of photographs documenting the growth and changes in his beloved Las Vegas landscape over the last 56 years. He traveled to Duesseldorf, Germany for five DRUPA international exhibitions to remain current in his profession. Dan thoroughly enjoyed and made priceless memories traveling in Europe with his wife to Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Austria. Dan's memorial funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 16, in the Masonic Memorial Temple, 2200 W. Mesquite Ave., Las Vegas. A Repast will follow at the temple.
