iconDONALD WELSH Donald Asa Welsh, 81, passed away Dec. 4, 2012. He was a resident of Las Vegas for 43 years. Don was a brilliant man, with several master's degrees, who could speak many languages. He was a teacher for over 50 years, and loved working with the at- risk youth. Born in Santa Barbara, Calif., he was ordained as a Franciscan priest Dec. 22, 1956, from the Santa Barbara Mission. He taught in Catholic high schools in several places in California, including Stockton, Oakland and Santa Barbara. In 1968, he left the order and married Donna Beitler. They moved to Las Vegas and raised their four children. He worked in the Clark County School District for over 35 years. Don was known for baking cookies for his students and always letting them know somebody cared for them. He impacted thousands of children's lives in his career. Don was a very friendly and kind man, with endless patience, and was also an incredible flirt and very charming. He gave unconditional love to those who knew him. He was a devout Catholic his entire life, and attended Mass at St. Francis De Sales almost daily. Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 14, at St. Francis De Sales, 1111 Michael Way. Interment of his ashes will be at 9 a.m., Monday, Dec. 17, at the Santa Barbara Cemetery.
