GENE BUTLER Obituary
GENE BUTLER Gene Paschal Butler, EdD, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the age of 73, surrounded by family. Gene was born Aug. 20, 1943, in Walnut Grove, Mississippi, to William and Hattie Pearl Butler. Gene graduated from Murrah High School, Jackson, Miss. in 1961. He joined the U.S. Navy and was an Interior Communications Electrician Second Class aboard the USS Dale. After the Navy, Gene moved to Las Vegas and earned his BS in Biological Sciences, Masters of Science in Biology and his EdD (Doctorate in Education) from UNLV. Gene worked for the Clark County School District for 27 years before retiring as the Secondary Science Curriculum Specialist in 2003. Upon retirement from the school district, he taught Science Education courses at UNLV as an adjunct and later as a Visiting Assistant Professor and also worked as a Science Team Supervisor for NWEA, a Portland, Oregon based test development company. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, William "Billy" Butler Jr., Mary Seale, Charles Butler, Beverly Butler and Robert "Bobby" Butler. He is survived by his wife, Janet Bourne Butler; daughter, Christine Russell, her husband, Donny; his granddaughter, Abigail Russell; siblings, Andre Rosalind "Roro" Ross and Josiah "Joe" Butler and his wife, Betty Butler; sister-in-law, Betty Butler; as well as countless nieces and nephews. Gene loved reading sci-fi and history, watching Westerns, researching genealogy, eating pistachios and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He and Jan loved to travel, visiting everywhere from Russia and Egypt to China and Norway. Gene was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2014, but never let it slow him down. Until days before his death he was giving speeches at his Sons of the American Revolution meeting and planning his and Jan's next trip. Celebration of his life will be at 3 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123. His remains will be interred at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, at a future date. Flowers or donations toward scholarships for biology students at UNLV are welcome. Gifts can be made payable to the UNLV Foundation with the reference "Dr. Gene Butler" and mailed to UNLV Foundation, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, Box 45-1006, Las Vegas, NV 89154.
