GEORGE CAMPBELL Obituary
GEORGE CAMPBELL 1928-2013 George C. Campbell passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at his home in Palm Gardens. The life of George: He was born Feb. 22, 1928, in Mt. Carmel, Ill. George grew up with three sisters, one brother, and a father who abandoned the family when George was a young boy. At 17, after surviving the Depression, George went to work in a pool hall, where he learned bartending, craps and poker. George began his career in gaming, working in backwoods illegal establishments called "roadhouses." During this time, George met and married Norma, and together they had two children, Greg and Terri. George went back to school and obtained his barber's license, and while working as a barber during the week, he ran back room poker games out of the barber shop on the weekends. In 1959, because of his son's medical status, George moved his family to Las Vegas. George went to work at the Royal in Henderson, and there he initiated and ran the first poker game at this casino. Having friends from back home in the casino business, George quickly went to work at the Sahara Hotel where he stayed for 10 years before going to the Riviera Hotel for the next 15 years, George finished his career in gaming at the Holiday casino. In 1984, George, Norma, and their son, Greg, obtained 135 acres on Highway 93 at the 163 intersection and together they founded the town of Palm Gardens, where they planned to build and operate a casino and RV park. At present, the Chevron gas station and mini-mart is the only business at Palm Gardens owned and run by George and Greg. George will join his wife, Norma, in the rose garden at Palm Memorial Park, 1325 N. Main St. Services will be private.
