 HAROLD FEDERWISCH Harold Richard "Hal" Federwisch, 82, of Henderson, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 27, 1930, in Sheboygan, Wis., to Cora Herziger Federwisch and Reno Federwisch (deceased). Hal graduated from North High School in Sheboygan, and attended the University of Wisconsin until his enlistment in the U.S. Air Force in 1950. As a staff sergeant, he served as an instructor Air Traffic Controller during the Korean War. He married his sweetheart since elementary school, Doris Oehmke, in 1951. Employed by the Federal Aviation Administration, Hal served and supervised in air traffic control towers across the United States. Towards the end of his career, he held senior management positions in control towers in California, including throughout the tumultuous controller's strike, finally retiring in 1985 with 35 years of service to the Federal government. A powerful and influential presence who loved life, his family and friends, he was an accomplished private pilot, achieved the expert level for amateur radio operations, was a champion pigeon racer and hobbyist farmer and rancher, enjoyed riding off-road and street motorcycles and playing golf, moved as a graceful square dance partner for Doris, and was committed to selfless and compassionate volunteer service for many organizations and events from the Gilroy Garlic Festival to the Morgan Hill Fourth of July parade. Hal, with Doris and his three sons, satisfied his wanderlust by frequently travelling the United States and Canada, camping, fishing and touring national parks and monuments in his motor home. Midway through retirement he and Doris moved to a retirement community in Henderson in 1999, where he enjoyed playing bridge and sheepshead, volunteering at St. Rose Siena Campus, and watching sports as a passionate Lakers and Packers fan. Hal was a member of New Song Lutheran Church, The Society of Airway Pioneers, the Amateur Radio Relay League, the Gilroy Amateur Radio Club, and the Gilroy Elks Club. He is survived by his wife, of 61 years, Doris Mae; sons, Bruce (Leida), David (Donna) of Las Vegas, and Jim (Vanessa) of Tampa, Fla.; granddaughters, Tory (Thomas Webb), Megan and Ashley; and grandsons, Craig and Steven Hayes and Josh Holland. There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at New Song Church, 1291 Cornet St., Henderson, NV 89052.
