HELEN PAYNE Obituary
HELEN PAYNE Helen Maurice "Mo" Harris Payne passed away Jan. 20, 2013, following a brief illness from pancreatic cancer. She was born Jan. 29, 1929, to H.M. and Vallie Harris in Nacogdoches, Texas. She spent time enjoying life amongst the beautiful piney woods and shore lines of Texas while raising three beautiful children and studying to become an executive secretary. Following a divorce, she ventured out for a high school reunion, which reunited her with her former classmate, Robert M. "Bob" Payne, now a resident of Las Vegas, who convinced her that there was this "other side of the world" that was quite nice if you liked 360 days of sunshine instead of "60-something," such as where she lived! She tried it and liked it, accepting Bob's marriage proposal and living the remainder of her life in their home. She was preceded by Bob's death March 21, 2010. She is survived by sisters, Katie Wray and Mavis Robertson (Billy); brother, Furman M. Harris (Carolyn); numerous nieces and nephews; children, Ira David Wheat Jr. (Cynthia), Joseph M. Wheat (Robert D. Vasquez), and Suzanne Chiu (Edward); grandchildren, Amy McElroy (Kyle) and Autumn Finnigan (Sean); great-grandchildren, Makena and Hana McElroy, and Mallory, Mara and Maddux Finnigan; stepchildren, Linda Luebs, Judy Payne and David Payne (Toni); and step-grandchildren, Amelia Payne and Lukas Luebs. Memorial gathering will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Nathan Adelson Hospice Foundation , OLLI/UNLV Foundation, or the .
