HILDA (Carmichael) ROOP Obituary
Hilda Roop
Hilda (Carmichael) Roop, a resident of Las Vegas since the late 1940s, died on January 19, 2017. In February, she would have been 100 years old. She was buried in Whitney, Texas, near her parents and grandparents. At her request, there was no formal service. She is survived by her son, Michael Roop, and her daughter, Karen (Sally) Roop.
A lifelong student, Hilda was constantly enrolled in courses to better herself. As a result, she became a Certified Public Secretary, received a realtor's license in Nevada, and accumulated nearly enough credits for a BA in accounting. All of this was achieved while she worked full-time. She was employed by J. Kell Houssels, Sr., for approximately two decades, first at the El Cortez and then at the Tropicana. Following his death, she worked for his son, J. Kell Houssels, Jr., at the Showboat Hotel until its closure.
In honor of Hilda, I would like to thank those whose dedication my mother would have acknowledged had she been able: the staff at Summerlin Hospital, especially the nurse Matt who was always patient and attentive; the staff of Nathan Adelson Hospice; the Houssels, who rewarded my mother so well over the years; Phyllis and Ed Gentry, who never waivered in their friendship to her; and Bill Rogers, my companion who was always a comforting presence to Mom.
