JACK DETTRE John R. "Jack" Dettre's life began in central Ohio, June 24, 1929, and ended Sept. 1, 2012, in Las Vegas. Jack graduated from Newark, High School, in Ohio, in 1947, served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, earned a bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University in communication studies and worked as a radio announcer in Newark, Ohio. Deciding to change careers, Jack earned three more degrees (bachelor's, masters, and his Ph.D.) from the Ohio State University, pursuing a successful career in education. He served as a high school teacher, principal and county superintendent in rural Ohio and, after attaining the doctorate, worked as a university professor in Buffalo, N.Y. (SUNY), Albuquerque, N.M. (UNM), Lexington, Ky. (UK), Denton, Texas (NTSU), and Las Vegas (UNLV). Besides teaching courses in educational administration, Jack also served as interim director of the library at UNLV. Early in his career at UNLV, he was one of the first announcers for the Running Rebels, a talent he continued to exploit after retirement along with various performing arts at Sun City Anthem and the Adult Theatre program at UNLV. Jack married Judith Harkness Dettre and they have three children, Jay (Theresa), Jeffrey (Tina) and Janna (Michael) Jensen. There are four grandchildren, Justin Dettre, Mikaela Jensen, John Church and Joseph Church. All are saddened by the loss of their husband, father and grandfather. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14, at Palm Mortuary-Eastern, 7600 S.
