JOHN HICKMAN John F. Hickman, 84, a long-time resident of Nevada, passed away at his home in Boulder City, Dec. 10, 2012, surrounded by his family. John was born in Greensboro, N.C., April 20, 1928. After graduating Hugh Morson High School, John worked at N.C. State University in the Ceramic Laboratory prior to enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, in service to his nation for over four years. In 1952, after service in the U.S. Air Force, John married Phyllis Olson, of Elbow Lake, Minn. John was a graduate of N.C. State University, where he earned his bachelor of science in engineering. After graduation, John worked in the private sector for a few years before joining the Veterans Administration, where he spent the remainder of his career. He served as Administrator at the VA hospital in Iowa City, Iowa and retired in 1989 as medical center administrator and CEO of the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Hospital and Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif. John was active in the American Society of Civil Engineers, Cost Engineers, and Rotary International. Additionally, John served as scout master of a Boy Scout troop and also coached baseball with the Boys Club while living in Maryland. John was preceded in death by two of his sons, John and Michael. He is survived by his beloved wife, of 60 years, Phyllis; as well as his son, Jeffrey Hickman (Christine) of Las Vegas; daughter, Susan Stark (Duncan) of Boulder City; grandchildren, Mary Rose Stark, Cassandra and William Bryan, and Stephanie Myers; and four great-grandchildren, Harmony Reed, Alexis, Alexandra and Israel Myers. Memorial services will be at 11:20 a.m., Friday, Dec. 28, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City.
