SCPO LUPE MENDEZ U.S. Navy, Retired Dec. 12, 1937 - Nov. 16, 2012 Our Lord called Lupe Mendez home for his final journey Nov. 16, 2012. Born in Progresso, Texas, he grew up in Sanger, Calif. He was a dedicated man who served his country for 22 years as a chief in the Seabees, U.S. Navy. After retiring, he started his own business in Texas, "The Can Do Man." He then moved to Las Vegas, and went to work at the Flamingo Hilton as a security officer. Lupe is survived by his wife, Sydnee; children, Lisa and John Welton of Springdale, Ark., Robin and Ed English of Austin, Texas, David Mendez and Darlene Ford of Las Vegas, and Renee and Stan McGarren of Boise, Idaho; sisters and brothers-in-law, Toni Avila and Peter Sanchez, Celia Avila, Gloria and Ray Cisneros of Sanger, and Irene and Nick Balderama of Fresno, Calif.; and two young men that lived with and took care of Lupe, we call them "our sons," Nilo Gravoso of Las Vegas, and Gary Mangaser of the Philippines. Viewing will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd. Graveside services will be at 1:20 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City.
