MARGARET SHANTA Margaret Irene (Sabo) Shanta, 97, of Las Vegas, formerly a resident of Hammond, Ind., peacefully passed away Jan. 21, 2013, at the home of her daughter, with whom she had resided since 2003. She was born May 1, 1915, in Pittsburgh, to Frank and Ida (Vas) Sabo. She was the eldest of four children. She grew up in East Chicago, Ind., where she attended Garfield Elementary School and East Chicago Washington High School. She had been a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church in East Chicago, the Woodmar Reformed Church in Hammond, and the Faith United Church of Christ in Hammond. In 1940, she married Charles Shanta. They were married for 45 years before his death in 1986. They lived in Hammond. Margaret and Charles saved and sacrificed to send their daughters to college. Margaret valued education and wanted "the best" for her daughters and grandsons, all of whom she greatly loved. She enjoyed music, dancing, crocheting, reading, and also noodle-making with her friends at the Faith United Church of Christ. In 2003, Margaret moved to Las Vegas to be near her daughters, Royleen Owczarzak, Karen Shanta, Charleen (late Daniel) Tom and Cecilia Shanta. She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant son, Kenneth Charles; her husband, Charles; her brother, Charles; her sisters, Priscilla (late Charles) Puskas and Eleanor Sabo; and her niece, Carol Vojvoda. She is survived by her four daughters; her four grandsons, Scott Owczarzak, Ted (Sandy) Tom, Russell Tom and John Tom; sister-in-law, Ethel (late Charles) Sabo of Hammond; several nieces and nephews, Jackie (late Norb) Pasko, Donald Clark, Ida (Mike) Pocci, Jeffrey (late Bonnie) Puskas, Warren (Andrea) Sabo, Charlene Ray, Philip (Rose) Shanta, Robert (Marsha) Underwood and Cheryl Underwood. The family wishes to thank Marcia and Teri and others at Nathan Adelson Hospice for the help they provided to Margaret and family over the last several months. Private services will be handled by Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., with Rev. Dan Morley officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Margaret to the Faith United Church of Christ, 3030 175th St., Hammond, IN 46323, or the Nathan Adelson Hospice Foundation , 4141 Swenson St., Las Vegas, NV 89169.
