1925 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
MARY CASHMAN Mary Theresa Carmichael Cashman, 91, left this Earth early Saturday morning, July 8, 2017, at her beloved ranch in Montana. Mary was a strong woman of body, mind and spirit. She was a patient and supportive mother who instilled values of excellence in her children. Mary was gracious and a pillar of strength for all those around her. She and her husband, James, were fundamental to the growth and development of Las Vegas and southern Nevada for over 60 years. Mary was born in 1925 in Whitetail, Montana, one of four children born to Gordon Carmichael and Elizabeth Dirks Carmichael. Mary's father was an engineer on the Union Pacific Railroad. Mary lived her early years in Las Vegas, and moved to the Garfield area of Los Angeles in 1931. The family relocated back to Las Vegas just before Mary's sophomore year at Las Vegas High School. Upon her return, Mary met her future husband, James Cashman Jr., sitting on his lap in a 1933 Ford as she hitched a ride home with her lifelong friends Donna and Gail Andress. Jim and Mary were married for 60 years. Mary was a community activist throughout her life. She was a 25-year member of Catholic Welfare at both the local and state level and chaired the state board for two years. Mary also served in many leadership positions for Service League of Las Vegas prior to its formation as the Junior League of Southern Nevada. During her time with the Service and Junior League, Mary worked on a number of community projects including leading Child Welfare Services, the Red Cross, Community Christmas Assistance for Needy Children, UNLV Library and Library Endowment Fund, and was the chairman for the Variety School for Handicapped Children Project. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon Sr., and Elizabeth; sister, Patricia Craddock; brother, Gordon Jr.; husband, James Cashman Jr.; and son, James Cashman III. Mary is survived by her brother, Ken Carmichael (96); son, Timothy (Denise); daughters, Rhonda Evans and Leah Benjamin; daughter-in-law, MaryKaye (James III, dec.); nine grandchildren, Neil Evans (Carleen), Jennifer Green (Mike), James Cashman IV (Michelle), Marguerite Raye (Matt), Samantha Cashman, Ali Cashman, Reese Benjamin (Erika), Alexander Benjamin and Emma Benjamin; and 10 great-grandchildren. Celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at the Chapel at Bishop Gorman High School, 5959 S. Hualapai Way, Las Vegas, NV 89148. Mom was a loving mother and a wonderful woman who will be greatly missed by her family, a thankful Las Vegas and all those she touched during her time on this Earth.
