MARY YAMAGATA Mary Pilar Yamagata, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, of San Gabriel, Calif., was born in South Pasadena, Calif., Dec. 24, 1936. She passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at 75. Pilar attended the Riverside School for the Deaf in Riverside, Calif. She retired a bank vault counter and resided in San Gabriel. Pilar loved to share her industrious knowledge as she was always willing to help her neighbors with their home improvement projects. She also had a big heart for dogs as she raised several small dogs well into their teen years. Many of her neighbors remember her as the lady who always willing to lend a hand. She loved her grandchildren and would often show their pictures off to her friends. Pilar was the youngest of nine children who was also the only one who was deaf. Pilar was preceded in death by her brothers, Antonio Arce, Mart Arce, Lee Arce, and Ray Arce; and sisters, Emilia Delgadillo and Frances D'Amico. She is survived by her sister, Nina Hernandez; two sons, Dennis (Cyndi) Cruz and Benny (Lily) Yamagata; and nine grandchildren, Daniel, Jessica, Brandon, Crystal, Laura, Alana, Benny, Misa and Miko. Services will be at 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 150 W. Duarte, Arcadia, CA 90017. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Humane Society.
