MIRIAM SANDLER Miriam Joan Sandler of Summerlin passed away from cancer July 30, 2012, at 75. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Lillian Kaner; her two sisters; and younger brother. She is survived by her husband, Ivan Sandler; their blended family of five children; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two very spoiled and adored cats. Miriam was born in the Bronx Dec. 28, 1936. She was a superior athlete and gifted student. She went to work immediately after graduation from high school, where she met and married her first husband Lawrence Peyser. They moved to Whittier, California, where their daughter Dr. Karen Peyser was born and raised. At this time Miriam began working as a tax preparer; her career blossomed and eventually led to a management position in state-of-the-art computer programming for specialty tax preparation of partnership and corporation tax returns in 19 states. She retired in 2002. After the death of her first husband from heart disease, Miriam met an old acquaintance, Ivan, in 1983. They had a mutual love of travel and together explored 30 countries on 3 continents including our own United States, Great Britain, China and Russia. They married in 1989 and together they skied, bicycled, played golf avidly, and completed two marathons and three half marathons with distinguished times as senior athletes. Miriam was an avid reader, loved plays, art, canasta, her life here in Las Vegas with her many close and beloved friends, her grandchildren, and of course she adored their cats. Here in Las Vegas, Miriam volunteered for many synagogue activities. She was a past vice president for BKB of Summerlin. Her Jewish faith was very important to her and she attended services and took adult education classes up until her final illness. She volunteered in the OK Adcock Elementary school reading program, and found fulfillment tutoring these small children. Services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 2, Palm Memorial Park-Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. In lieu of flowers, please donate to any cancer research or humane organization.
