Nancy Astle Obituary
NANCY ASTLE Nancy Jean Unger Astle passed away Sept. 6, 2011, in her sleep, at home in her quilt room with her amazing husband, of 52 years, Tom, nearby. She was 74. Nancy was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., Jan. 9, 1937, to Titus and Louise Unger and raised in the nearby town of Dell Rapids. After attending Mount Marty College, Nancy taught school for two years in Hysham, Mont., then moved to Billings. In Billings, she participated in "Pat's Club," a social club for young single Catholics and it was there she met the love of her life, Thomas Astle. June 13, 1959 they were married, and over the next few years welcomed four children, Tommy, Lisa, Jennifer and Kevin. Her love for her husband and her children was one of her greatest gifts -- she gave us her unconditional love and support, and filled her home with laughter, good food and the warmth of family. Nancy was an articulate writer, a giver to those less fortunate, and an adventurous cook (once the 60's had passed). Most importantly, she was an amazing quilter. Her baby quilts were legendary, and have brought comfort to hundreds of babies, from South Korea, to gravely ill babies and to her own grandchildren. She created her own miniature quilt patterns and sold many of her quilts to benefit Alzheimer's, in honor of her mother-in-law and her father. She continued to give through her beautiful stitches until her hands could no longer sew. Nancy is survived by her husband, Tom; son, Tom (Saralee); daughters, Lisa (David) and Jennifer (Peter); son, Kevin (Sarah); her sisters, Carol, Roxie (Roger); brother, David (Carol); and her eight beloved grandchildren, Thomas, Simon, Maggie, Gracie, Oliver, Riley, Eden and Jayne. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Ronnie. A special thanks to her devoted caregiver, Kathy Perry, and all of the nurses and staff at ALS of Nevada and Odyssey Hospice. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at St. Joseph, Husband, of Mary Catholic Church, 7260 W. Sahara Ave. in Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to ALS of Nevada, www.alsofnevada.org
