ROBERT BEAN Robert Alexander Bean, aka "Dr. Jazz," was born Jan. 26, 1935 and passed into eternal rest Aug. 24, 2012. He began his earthly journey from the parents Gillus Bean and Marjorie I. Alexander, in Topeka, Kan. He was the first of five. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, William L. Bean and Ivan O. Bean. Robert attended public schools in Topeka, but because he contacted polio at the age of three, he had difficulty with school. He received a scholarship and enrolled in the school for the blind, where he became a radio disc jockey. Robert was an avid jazz fan and overcame many odds. He became quite a dancer. He was known in many jazz sets. Arriving in Las Vegas in the early 1970's, he became a D.J. at KCEP, where he was one of the gospel D.J.'s, as well as jazz. He received numerous rewards as a D.J., including being inducted into the Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Robert also worked with the school district in the grandparents program. He leaves behind four sisters, Sarah (Mack) Sims and Marcella Ashford of Las Vegas, Cheryl Bean and Phyllis (Harold) Johnson of Chicago; a dear companion, Carleen Gordon; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and numerous friends. Viewing will be from noon-6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4. Services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5, both at Thomas and Jones Funeral Home, 310 Foremaster Lane, Las Vegas. "Rest in peace, Dr. Jazz. We love and miss you."
