ROBERT THORNILEY Obituary
COL. ROBERT THORNILEY U.S. Army, Retired Col. Robert M. Thorniley (ret.), 87, was a long-time resident of the Las Vegas area. Robert passed away Jan. 18, 2013 at Nathan Adelson Hospice. He was born in Topeka, Kan., March 10, 1925, to Genevieve and Ralph Thorniley. As an enlisted man, he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the U.S. and in Europe from 1943 to 1946. He received his law degree from George Washington University in 1949. He was commissioned in the Judge Advocate General's Corps in 1950, and subsequently served in Korea, Guam, Japan and the Panama Canal Zone. Throughout Robert's distinguished military career, he taught procurement law at the Judge Advocate General School at the University of Virginia, served as the Staff Judge Advocate General at White Sands Missile Range, and was then called to serve on the U.S. Board of Contract Appeals in Washington, D.C. Col. Thorniley retired from the military in 1972 and worked over 15 years until his second retirement as the chief legal counsel for EG&G in Las Vegas. Throughout his career, Robert was recognized with many awards, including the Legion of Merit. His most outstanding accomplishment, however, was the influence he left on his family and those who were fortunate enough to know him. Robert was married to Virginia Simmons for 43 years until her death in 1991. He was later married to Wanda Millis for 10 years until her passing in 2011. Robert is survived by his three children, Robert Thorniley Jr., Tracey Johnson (George) and Tammy White (Mark); eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and dear companion, Lee Rose. Robert was an avid reader, golfer and loved to work crossword puzzles. Although he had an extensive vocabulary, he was a man of few words. He was a humble man with great integrity, and was known for his quick wit, generosity and selflessness. Truly an officer and a gentleman, he will be deeply missed. Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, with funeral services following, both at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave.
