SAM UPTON Obituary
SAM UPTON Sam Upton, 90, of Las Vegas, known to many as the "Ancient One," whose motto for longevity was "stay vertical," sat down for a rest Labor Day, Sept. 2, 2013. Guess he was right ... His philosophy was that through hard work you can build great things. He built a marriage that lasted since 1941, he built two strong sons and a lot of memories from his travels. He worked for 60 years in various levels of construction management, notably being project manager for the original building of the southern Nevada water project to bring water to Las Vegas from Lake Mead. He managed the work for many hotel projects including Caesar's Palace, Circus Circus, Riveriera and the original MGM. His influence on the Las Vegas skyline since moving here 52 years ago will be seen for a long time. He finished his career at the Clark County School District by managing the removal of asbestos from district schools. He was born in Pasadena, Calif. in 1923 and graduated high school from Avalon High on Santa Catalina Island, Calif. His exposure to island life and the sea took him worldwide investigating the South Pacific and many far-away ports. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geri of 54 years. He is survived by his brother, Robert; sons, Sam and Randy; and grandchildren, Sam Teri and Jill. He also leaves behind all the family and friends on his beloved Santa Catalina Island. No services are scheduled.
