In 1970, Terry moved to Las Vegas, and graduated from UNLV in 1974. He married Sharon Marren in 1972. He attended California Western School of Law, where he was named the "outstanding first year law student" in 1975. He served as managing editor of the Law Review and earned the "outstanding litigator award" during the 1977 Mock Trial Competition. Subsequent positions include chief counsel to the Welfare Division, deputy attorney for the attorney general of Las Vegas, deputy city attorney of North Las Vegas, and was Nevada's first domestic relations referee for the Eighth Judicial Court of Las Vegas. He was elected as one of the first three judges of the newly-created Family Court in 1993. He married Teresa Mitchell, in 1995, and they moved to Mesquite, where Terry became the first full-time city attorney for the City of Mesquite. He retired in 2005, and was recalled to active service by the Nevada Supreme Court as a senior district court judge. He held that position until his passing. Terry authored articles for legal publications and participated in numerous legal groups. He was most passionate about advocating for and helping children.
