Tommy Montes Obituary
TOMMY MONTES "Terrible" Tommy Montes, passed away Sept. 20, 2011, at the age of 69. He was born Sept. 18, 1942 in Los Angeles, and grew up in Bakersfield, Calif. At age of 17, Tom joined the U.S. Navy. He moved to Las Vegas in 1962 and established several businesses over the years, with his current being Silver State Speed Shop, which he ran with his son, Mike Montes. Tom was a true "NASCAR" racer of his time; with most recognizable as being the "1st Track Champion at Mesa Marin," in Bakersfield. Tom was a fixture at Craig Road Speedway, and many other west coast tracks in the 70's-80's. In more recent years, Tom enjoyed his weekend "car shows," showing off his most prized possession. In the summer, Tom enjoyed time on the lake with his boat, riding the Harley; and in the winter, it was sand dune time. Tom enjoyed life to its fullest. He is survived by his partners, Lynn Erickson and Suzette Mathis; brother, Robert Montes; sons, Michael Montes and Thomas Montes Jr.; daughters, Regina Riggs and Renee Montes-Longo; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, with services following, both at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Celebration of life party to immediately follow at Silver State Speed Shop, 1317 S. Commerce St.
