VERNE WINN Verne Winn, 94, of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully Jan. 18, 2013, in Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by his wife and sweetheart, Ruth; two sons, Ted and Donald; and four sisters, Magda, Udine, Jessie and Essie. He is survived by his brother, Ray of Salem, Ore.; and three children, Verna Kay, Evan and George. He has 19 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Verne was born Nov. 14, 1918, in Widsoe, Utah, to Jesse Winn and Mary Matney Sager. He grew up in the Overton/Logandale area. He married Ruth Prince Sept. 14, 1937. Verne joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1944 to 1946. After the war, he started Winn Construction Company in Las Vegas. He had a thriving business constructing homes and small commercial buildings until 1966, when he became a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise owner. Through the following years he was highly successful and had stores in California and Arizona. Verne was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and held many positions, including working in the Las Vegas temple. Verne's greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. His services will be Saturday, Jan. 26 at the LDS chapel, 6601 W. Twain in Las Vegas. The viewing will be at 9 a.m. and his funeral service at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perpetual Education Fund at ldsp.org or (800) 525-8074.
