VIVIENNE KERNS Vivienne Parlade Kerns, 84, of Las Vegas, passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, in Colorado Springs, Colo., while visiting family. She was born Nov. 18, 1928, to the late Sabas and Paz Parlade in Guinobatan, Albay, Philippines. She married the late Kendall C. Kerns in the Philippines while he was assigned to U.S. Naval Station - Sangley Point in Manila Bay. His Naval assignments took them to Florida and then Hill Air Force Base, Layton, Utah. After his military retirement, they lived in Cortez, Colo., and then moved to Las Vegas in 1985, where they remained. Kendall predeceased Vivienne in 2008. Vivienne was outgoing and generous with her time, participating in many civic and religious organizations throughout her life, including Supreme Student Counsel, president of the Navy Wives Club in the Philippines, Women's Auxiliary Service (WAS), International Women's Club in Utah, American Red Cross, SOCIO, Catholic Women's Organization, Golden Agila Lion's Club, Delegate to Counsel on Aging, Consumer Member of the Chiropractic Physicians' Board of Nevada, Member of the Nevada Seniors Coalition, Board Member of Bikol National Association of America (BNAA) and Chair of the Bicolanos of Nevada - Las Vegas Chapter, Philippine Cultural Heritage Society of Nevada, NaFFAA and Member of the Family Worship Christian Center in Las Vegas. She was crowned Miss Senior Sweetheart in 1997 and remained active in the pageants thereafter. There were more organizations and achievements than listed here, but her favorite accomplishment was being recognized as Clark County Mother of the Year in 1998. Vivienne is survived by eight children and their families, Cedric (Butch) and Adelina (Lilly) Parlade of Las Vegas, Rochelle and Michael Oleksuk of Niceville, Fla., Jossette (JD) and Keith McGinley of Colorado Springs, Ilene Martin-Hall and Monte Hall of Las Vegas, Kenneth and Karri Kerns of New Orleans, Eugene and Ketty Kerns of Colorado Springs, Dion and Wendy Kerns of Colorado Springs, and Cedric and Rebecca Kerns of Las Vegas; 27 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; six siblings, Salvadore (Bob) Parlade, Custodio (Ging) Parlade, Alfonso (Toy) Parlade, Patricia (Tunay) Warner, Aida (Dada) Raymond and Terasita (Tess) Smith; and in-laws, Carl and Rose Kerns, and Elvin and Carolyn Tufly. Vivienne was outgoing and loved social gatherings. She once said in an interview that "It's not what you keep, but what you give away that makes you rich" and by that belief she made numerous friends whom she warmly and genuinely welcomed into her life as if they were her own family, including Bev and Lou Ivy, Zenaida Laluna, Iwalani Carino, John and Dee Gee, and Dr. Soloman Javier. Were Vivienne writing this list, it would be longer as she greatly valued her friendship with each of you.
