Obituary Condolences

JACK DUNLAP Jack S. Dunlap, 84, a 14 year resident of Henderson, passed away peacefully at home May 23, 2014. He will also be remembered lovingly as "Uncle Jack," and as "Grandy" by his "grands" and "great-grands." Jack was born in Mullens, W/Va., to James and Mary (nee Carpenter) Dunlap. He was subsequently raised in Mullens and Charleston, W.Va. by his sisters. He began his career years in West Virginia by following his dads lead as a locomotive fireman and engineer for the Virginian Railway. He served two years in the U.S. Army and applied the G.I. Bill to obtaining an accounting degree from Concord College. That degree led him to his second career as a special agent with the U.S. Treasury Department, which he enjoyed for over 20 years, serving in Ohio and California, before his retirement in 1980. It was there that he met and married Linda 36 years ago. Upon retirement from Federal government service, he entered his third and final career as a private financial fraud consultant while awaiting Linda's retirement. Together, they visited four continents and over 50 destinations, but also enjoyed long stretches at home hammering nails and planting gardens. Jack was an Eagle Scout and loved outdoor activities like fishing, boating and skiing. He was also actively involved in little league and scouting activities with his children. He was a proud Mason for over 55 years and sincerely enjoyed helping others. He also sustained a life-long love affair with all things "train." He was a strong man, yet a kind and generous soul. He will be desperately missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Harriette "June;" son, Jack "Stoney;" his parents; and his four siblings. He is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughter, Katherine of California; his son, James (Julie) of Texas; his daughter-in-law, Christina of California, and their extended families. Services celebrating his life and legacy will be privately held in California. "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." - Dr. Seuss -
