ESTHER VACCHINA Obituary
ESTHER VACCHINA April 4, 1926-July 5, 2014 Esther Golick Vacchina, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to many, passed away July 5, 2014 in Reno, at the age of 88. She was born Easter Sunday, April 4, 1926, in Susanville, Calif., to Stella and Chuck Golick, Esther was brought to Reno by her parents at six months of age, and always proudly considered herself a native Nevadan. Esther attended Orvis Ring Elementary School, North Side Junior High School and Reno High School. She attended the University of Nevada, Reno from 1943 to 1947 and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree. While at UNR, she was active in the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. In 1946 at UNR, Esther met her future husband, Elmer Vacchina, and they were married Dec. 22, 1947 in Reno. Esther loved music and sang with several chorale groups in Reno for many years. She loved playing bridge and also enjoyed golf and craft work. As an avid outdoorsman, she joined Elmer on many hunting and fishing outings throughout Nevada and the west. In 1961, the family relocated to Las Vegas for 13 years and Esther was very active with PEO Chapter V. In addition to being a full-time homemaker, she volunteered with the Home of the Good Shepherd and the Easter Seal Society. When they returned to Reno in 1974, Esther became active with PEO Chapter Q and several bridge groups. An excellent cook, Esther enjoyed hosting many social gatherings for friends and especially loved large family dinners. She and Elmer loved parties, socializing and dancing and were long-time members of Hidden Valley Country Club. She is survived by her husband, of over 67 years, Elmer Vacchina; her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tim Sweeney; her son and son-in-law, Ron Vacchina and Dan Tang; her granddaughter and husband, Leanne and Nate Vielehr; her grandson, Brian Sweeney; and her great-grandchildren, Riley and Owen Vielehr. Esther is also survived by loving nieces and nephews and their families. Memorial Mass will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, 1138 Wright St., Reno, NV 89509. A reception will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Hidden Valley Country Club, 3575 E. Hidden Valley Drive, Reno, NV 89502. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider supporting either of two causes dear to Esther's heart, Heifer International, One World Ave., Little Rock, AR 72202 and the University of Nevada Reno Foundation, Financial Services and Records, UNR, Mail Stop 162, Reno, NV 89557.
