Larry Kifer Obituary
LARRY KIFER Larry Kifer, a 50-year resident of Las Vegas, passed away Oct. 24, 2009, at the young age of 64, from complications with his recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He was born Nov. 29, 1944, in Kansas City, Mo., and at a very young age, his family moved to the Las Vegas Valley. He was a graduate of Rancho High School and went on to the University of Arizona, earning a degree in marketing. Larry had a prolific business career. He began his career at Centel Telephone Company and later co-founded two telecommunication companies: Tie Communication and Technicom International, both based in Stamford, Conn. In 1990, he purchased the Algiers Hotel and served as CEO until its sale in 2004. He currently served on the board of directors of Desert Bank, Community Bank and Golden Rainbow Ribbon of Life. He was past chairman of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada. On Dec. 6, 2007, he was sworn in as Chamber Board president, and July 18, 2009, he was nominated and accepted a national directors position of the GLADD Organization. Larry is survived by his partner, John Lendackey; former wife, Marianne Kifer; two stepchildren, J.M. Pohorsky and John Pohorsky, all of Las Vegas; aunt, June Shupe of Broken Arrow, Okla.; cousins, Barbara and Ron Roller, Diana and Todd Anderson, Chad Acree, Marci Roller and Ashley Anderson, of Tulsa, Okla., Sharon Fancher of Kansas City, Mo., and Michael and Megan Roller of Sherman, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing and Rosary service will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Palm Mortuary - South Jones, 1600 S. Jones Blvd. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, 3050 Alta Drive, with a reception following the funeral Mass. Private family entombment follows the social gathering. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be sent to Golden Rainbow, 3233 W.
