Shirley Bower Obituary
SHIRLEY BOWER Shirley Bower (nee Park) of Las Vegas, passed away, Dec. 18, 2010, losing her fight with cancer. She was the wife of the late, Edward Bower. Shirley was born Nov. 19, 1939 in Wilmington, Mass. She was the 10th child of Philip Studley Park and Dorothy Rodden. Shirley attended Wilmington schools, graduating in the Class of 1957. After graduation, she became a nurse attendant at the No. Reading State San. Later she went on to serve in the United States Navy...serving in California and Texas. While in the service, she met her first husband, Dean Keith Wheelington of Louisiana. They were married Feb. 6, 1960 in Oak Grove, La. They were later divorced. After the service, she returned to Massachusetts and became employed as an engineering secretary for the Jetspay Corporation. At that time, Shirley only spent a short time in Massachusetts and then decided that she would follow her sister, Pauline, who was heading for Phoenix. They both enjoyed the sun-drenched days. When in Phoenix, she met and married Edward Cline Bower, Aug. 10, 1968 in Las Vegas. This was a very special marriage and they had some wonderful years together. As a child, Shirley was sickly and this condition offered her special attention from her parents. However, after her tonsils were removed later in her young years and she became stronger, she still retained that special spot in her parents' eyes. However, Shirley did not let this earlier condition deter her from becoming a very active part of the family and she became a jokester at a very young age, showing her whit and charm to the delight of her parents. She carried this charm and whit throughout her life and we never knew what she would come up with in any given situation. Shirley enjoyed traveling, country music, NASCAR, watching NFL games, swimming in her pool and family dinners and barbecues. She always looked forward to seeing her grandchildren. Plus, for many years, Shirley and Ed would enjoy the fun and exercise of line dancing. Then of course, Shirley thoroughly enjoyed communicating with her Cyber friends and family members! Shirley is survived by her loving son, Michael S. Bower of Las Vegas; and son-in-law, Jim Scancella. She was the devoted grandmother of Patrick, Sean and Adam Morgan, Darrian and Jameson Bower; two great-grandchildren seven brothers, Robert A. Park (Louise) of Andover, Mass., Philip S. Park, Jr. (Laurette) of Windham, N.H., David C. Park of Boston, Allen R. Park, of Salem, N.H., Thomas W. Park of Chelmsford, Mass., Kenneth D. Park (Nancy) of Pittsfield, N.H., and Lloyd L. Park (Patricia) of Sarasota, Fla.; five sisters, Marjorie L. Belloir (Shirley) of Andover, Ruth P. Fuss of Evergreen Park, Ill., Martha G. Rice of Derry, N.H. and Pauline S. Park of Phoenix; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Bower; her daughter, Debra Lynn Bower-Scancella; her parents; sisters, Phyllis D. Morse, Beverly Ann Briggs, Priscilla J. and Nancy E. Park; and brothers, Richard W., Ronald E., William M. and Baby Edward Park. Shirley thoroughly enjoyed her life in the western part of the United States. A committal service with military honors will be at 11:20 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd., Boulder City, NV 89005, (702) 486-5920.
