MICHAEL SZOPO Michael Szopo passed away May 1, 2012 at his home in Las Vegas, surrounded by his wife, of 67 years, and children. He was a resident of Nevada for over eight years. Michael was born April 7, 1919 in Vestaburg, Pa. to Frank and Julia Szopo. He was the fifth of seven sons and two younger sisters. He attended school in Detroit, and graduated from Southwestern High School. He served as a corporal in World War II and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne, 80th Airborne Anti-Aircraft Battalion Battery D. He fought several major campaigns including D-Day, the Holland Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded six campaign stars, a bronze arrowhead and the Presidential Unit Citation. Michael returned home, married Helen in 1946, and worked a 41-year career with Ford Motor Company as a supervisor at the Dearborn Stamping Plant. His retirement included homes in Arizona, Michigan, and Las Vegas. He enjoyed being with his family and was an avid carpenter, coin collector and western book and movie enthusiast. He was very proud of serving his country. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Julia Szopo; his brothers, Frank, Joseph, James, Louis and Arthur; and sisters, Margaret Zakar and Isabelle Metropolis. He is survived by his wife, Helen Szopo; sons, Michael J. Szopo (Linda), Kenneth Szopo (B. Suzanne), Thomas Szopo (Deborah); daughter, Laura Martin (Tim); grandsons, Michael, Charles, James, Gregory, Dustin, and Ryan; granddaughters, Katherine DeCavitte, Stephanie Main and Rebecca Boss; great-grandsons, Aiden and Wyatt DeCavitte; brother, Stephen Szopo. Military funeral honors will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 15, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd., Boulder City.
