KAREN PARKES Karen Suzanne Parkes, 76, a homemaker, of Las Vegas, passed away May 1, 2012. She was born Oct. 23, 1935, to Ivan and June Whittemore Peterson, in St. Louis, and was a 35-year resident of Nevada. Karen grew up in Grand Rapids, Minn., where she met her husband, Harry "Vic" Parkes, who was stationed there at Finland Air Force Station, and they were married in 1957. Karen enjoyed outdoor activities with her family and had a love of reading and crossword and circle the word puzzles. She liked playing the piano and spending time with her grandchildren at the park and at their church events. Swimming in the pool was great, but her real love was boat rides on Lake Pokegama when she visited in Grand Rapids. Karen was a headstrong but sweet, funny lady who made friends easily. She loved being around her family no matter what the activity. Karen was preceded in death by her parents; and her former husband. Karen is survived by her children, Robert, Terry, Jeffery and Mary; her brother, Lee; sister, Andrea; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four nieces; two nephews; and many cousins. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Mt. Charleston Baptist Church, 1 Kyle Canyon Road, Mt. Charleston. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Mt. Charleston Baptist Church. "Mom, sister, auntie and friend, we miss your smile and hugs."
