JOHN GAYTON Phoenix - John Edward Michael Gayton, born Jan. 17, 1921, in Chicago, passed on peacefully, Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at the age of 91. John spent his early years in Chicago, where his father served as city engineer for the City of Chicago. John attended the University of Chicago Lab School, then briefly attended Notre Dame University, before moving to Boston. In Boston, John attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was awarded a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He later attended Harvard University, completing a master's degree in business administration. John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific. He left the Navy with the rank of lieutenant commander. Throughout his long career in marketing and executive administration, John was known as a brilliant and creative individual, impacting everyone with whom he came into contact. He was an avid ham radio operator, loved old cars, model trains and was a superb photographer. For the past three years, John and Dorothy lived in Phoenix. Prior to that, they were residents of Las Vegas, and Grand Junction, Colo. John was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Gayton; and father, Loran DeLancey Gayton. John is survived by his wife, of 61 years, Dorothy; daughter, Jan Bruner; son, Loran Gayton and his wife, Soheila; daughter, Ann and her husband, Ferdie Gomes; sister, Jean Carroll; grandchildren, Andrew and Aleixo Gomes; and stepgrandchildren, Lauren Robydek and Johnathan Bruner. Per John's request, no services will be held. Instead, the family will hold a private celebration of John's life. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the American Red Cross Sandy Relief Fund.
