GORDON GABLIN Obituary
GORDON GABLIN Gordon E. Gablin, 81, of Henderson, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013. He was born Feb. 29, 1932, in Chicago. Gordon was inducted into the U.S. Army Sept. 4, 1952 at Fort Sheridan, Ill. Basic training took him to Camp Chaffe, Ark., followed by training to become a clerk-typist. In February 1953, he was sent to Seattle, where he shipped out to Inchon, Korea, and was assigned to the 7th Infantry Division, 31st Infantry Regiment B Company. Working with the Red Cross, he was aissgned to the United Nations Command, Military Armistice Commission at Panmunjon. He was sent to Seoul to work on officers records. His highest rank achieved was corporal. For military services overseas and the United States, Gordon received the following medals Korean Service, National Defense Service and the Commendation medals. After 13 months in Korea, he returned to San Francisco. In April 1954, he was sent to Camp Crowder, Mo. To work on officers records until he received an honorable discharge Sept. 5, 1954. As a civilian, he went to work for Oscar C. Rixon in Franklin Park, Ill. as a bookkeeper. He worked there for almost 40 years and retired Oct. 1, 1992. He married Effie Gaupp Nov. 13, 1954. After 36 years of marriage, she passed away Aug. 29, 1990. Gordon met his second wife, JoAnn at a VFW anniversary party and they were married Aug. 30, 1991, in Illinois. Three years later, they came west to Henderson. She passed away July 1, 2006. Prior to coming to Henderson, Gordon had been a member of the VFW since Septemter 1963. He served as quarter master 1964-1968 and 1971-1990, senior vice commander 1968-1969, commander 1969-1970, officer of the day, 1990-1992 and chaplain 1992-1993. He transferred his VFW life membership to Basic Post 3848 in 1996 and took over as quartermaster for 1996-1997. Gordon worked part-time as a school crossing guard for Henderson until January 2013. Memorial services will be at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Make-A-Wish or Betty Honn's Animal Adoptions Ltd.
