ETA CHINKES Beloved wife, mother and grandmother Eta Chinkes, of Las Vegas, passed away at her home January 25, 2019, three days shy of her 95th birthday. Her greatest joy was sharing her life with Sam, her loving husband of 68 years who was her devoted caretaker for the past three years, her daughter Anita, her grandchildren, Henry and Sofie, her son-in-law, Scott, and her extended family and friends. Eta was born in Sosnowiec, Poland and survived the Holocaust, but lost her parents Leibish and Jadza Rotfeld and her only brother Heniek. Despite her unbearable suffering in the concentration camps, she chose to face her future with hope and love. She was passionately committed to sharing the lessons of the Holocaust which she accomplished by speaking about her experience in schools and through her involvement with Survivors groups and Jewish organizations in Las Vegas and in New York. Eta arrived in New York in 1946 and created a beautiful life there for forty-five years. We will miss her lovely smile, her laugh, her singing, her impeccable style and the gorgeous clothes that she created, her sweet handwritten notes, and her cooking (especially chicken soup, stuffed cabbage and Rose's jam cookies). Being with her grandchildren truly lit up her life and gave her joy in her final days. Her positive outlook and love of family live on in each of us and will be passed on to future generations.
