ARTHUR "ARTIE" SELMAN Arthur "Artie" Selman, 84, passed away January 25, 2018, in Las Vegas. He was born January 7, 1934, to Samuel and Minnie (Selman) in New York City. Artie started working at the Copacabana Club in New York City at the age of 15, after his mother signed permission for him to work. He became a maitre d' until 1958 when he moved to Las Vegas and started working at the Sands Hotel and Casino (1959-1962). Artie implemented lavish gourmet dining rooms such as the Regency Room at the Sands, where he catered to the 'Rat Pack" and John F. Kennedy, as well as The House of Lords at the Sahara Hotel and Casino. During 1969-1970, Artie partnered with Nate Jacobson in Lake Tahoe to revamp The Sahara Tahoe Hotel into the Camelot-themed Kings Castle Hotel and Casino. He returned to Las Vegas, residing at the Dunes Hotel and Casino until Morris Shenker offered him the position as Casino Manager. He lived and worked at the Dunes for the next 15 years. Artie was the first to hire female dealers in Las Vegas. He retired from the Dunes in 1983. Artie was known for his passion for thoroughbred horse racing which continued into retirement. He owned many winning horses at the Del Mar, Santa Anita and Belmont racetracks, among others. Artie was known as a man of his word. He was honest, hardworking, compassionate and generous. He is survived by his sons, Mark (Molly) and Richard (Jolande); his daughter, Carrie; and his grandchildren, Julia, Lucy, Priscilla, George and Chanelle. Services will be private.
