HORACE AYRES Horace Travis Ayres, age 103, passed peacefully November 17, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 26, 1914, to Pennie and Reba Ayres in San Antonio, Texas, but was raised in Bedford, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Mr. Ayres graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1937 with a degree in chemical engineering. He was commissioned shortly after graduation and served in the U.S. Army Reserves until he was called to active duty in January 1942. He was assigned to a Chemical Warfare company. Mr. Ayres served honorably in Australia and Papua New Guinea, and was awarded One Bronze Star for action in the Pacific. He met and married the love of his life, Valmae Quirk, in Brisbane, Australia. They had five children and celebrated 75 years of marriage this year. Travis had a distinguished career at the Washington Gas Light Company in Northern Virginia. After retiring from the gas company, Travis and Val moved to Las Vegas. Travis was an avid golfer well into his 90's. Travis was preceded in death by his son, Michael; his parents; and many other family members. He is survived by his wife; four of his five children, Patrick, Teresa, John and David; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Peterson; and many nephews and nieces. Service will be at 9 a.m. Friday, December 1, at The Guardian Angel Cathedral, 336 Cathedral Way, Las Vegas.
