1933 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
RICHARD ALGER Richard Earl Alger, 85, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at home, with his wife, ot 64 years, Gloria, at his side. Born March 7, 1933, Earl was a Las Vegas native. He graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1952. He entered the IBEW Local 357 apprenticeship program not long after and worked at Las Vegas Electric, helping wire many of the original hotels and casinos. He owned All Electric Inc. and, later, Sign Service. He married Gloria Hicks, also a Las Vegas native, February 23, 1954, in the St. George Temple. He loved children-his own and others'. He would offer to soothe a stranger's crying child so mom could finish her meal at Macayo's. He served as PTA co-president at then-Bonanza Elementary School and volunteered in the Boy Scouts for 50 years. As a Scoutmaster, he took his troop to the National Scout Jamboree in 1973 and he and Gloria took advanced training at the Philmont Scout Ranch. He received the Silver Beaver Award in 2002. LDS Girls' Camp relied on him as an adult leader for many years. He loved hiking, camping and most anything outdoors. Earl was an LDS church all-star fast-pitch softball outfielder as a young man. He coached youth teams and refereed high school basketball throughout the valley for 25 years. In the LDS church, Earl served in the old Third Ward bishopric and as bishop of the 27th ward. He was a Las Vegas Temple ordinance worker for 26 years, including 11 years as a sealer. He and Gloria served a temple mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. Dedicated to service, after retirement, Earl did electrical work for folks and drove cancer patients to treatment. He loved woodworking and left many pieces to remember him by. Earl is survived by his wife, of 64 years, Gloria Hicks Alger; his sister, Janiece Wiley; his children, Sybel Alger (Edward R. Strelow), Elaine Speer (Dean), David Alger (Christy), Wayne Alger (Julie) and Carl Alger (Jan); grandchildren, Bailey Strelow, Victoria Strelow, Vincent Hagey, Nicholas Hagey, Mary Louise Hagey, Heather Worthen (Billy), Jimmy Alger, Michael Alger, Jill Putnam (Matt), Bobby Alger (Amber), Jordan Maxwell, Cassie Marriott (William), Emily Christensen (William), Tanner Maxwell, Charles Alger, Caleb Alger, Trevor Alger and Alissa Alger; and six great-grandchildren. Viewing will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 8. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, both at the Tropicana Chapel, 2275 E. Tropicana Ave.
