SANDRA RUNKLE Sandra (nee Bedard) Runkle left this world June 19, 2018. She was born June 20, 1940, in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, to Joseph and Grace Bedard. The family moved to Long Beach, California in 1942, where Sandy attended St. Anthony's grammar and high school and graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic in June 1958. She was a lifetime member of the California Scholarship Federation. Throughout her teen years and later, she danced with the Long Beach Civic Light Opera, as well as an original musical in Hollywood. She married Robert Runkle May 30, 1959, they later divorced. They had five sons, all one year apart. She attended Orange County College of Court Reporting, worked for the state of California as an Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board hearing reporter, earned her Certified Shorthand Reporter's certificate and worked for Los Angeles Superior Court for 25 years, primarily in the Norwalk courthouse. She began buying property in Las Vegas in 1989 and moved here in 1995 after her retirement from the court system in 1993. She met Sam Andrews in Las Vegas, and they enjoyed the next 10 years together, traveling yearly to their timeshare in Mazatlan, riding his Harley, attending shows and playing in Blackjack tournaments and enjoying all the activities and amenities Las Vegas had to offer until his death in 2004. During Sam's life, she became a licensed realtor. In 2005, she returned to the joys of her youth and enrolled in the Senior Adult Theatre Program at UNLV, appearing in both dance and dramatic productions throughout the valley. She used her accumulated credits and further studies to become a certified gerontologist. She was hired by Road Scholars to direct tours in the city. She was the first volunteer at the Neon Museum. She was the first volunteer at Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. She was a candidate in the Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant, winning the Ms. Congeniality award in 2011. At age 71, she speareaded the founding of The Speeding Theatre, Over 55, a 501(c)(3) corporation, as its president. She wrote monthly articles for Senior Connections magazine. Her infectious smile always lit up the room whenever she entered. She lived life to its fullest and experienced many situations and events, many of which she felt went beyond the normal experiences of life. She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Bedard; and her sister, June Putnam; Sandra is survived by two sisters, Rhodyne Tappe and Adair Wadkins; her five sons, Guy, John, Thomas, James and Donald Runkle; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be 1-5 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at her home. Please contact her son, Guy at [email protected] if you plan to attend. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 16, at St. Barbara Catholic Church, 730 S. Euclid St., Santa Ana, CA 92704. There will be a brief graveside service following at All Souls Cemetery, 4400 Cherry Ave., Long Beach, CA 90807.
