He was born March 30, 1925, in Tonopah, to Walter Varah Long and Ada Mathews, and was a longtime resident of Las Vegas. The family moved to Las Vegas in 1930. He grew up downtown attending the 5th Street Grade School and Las Vegas High School. He graduated in 1943 and was drafted in to the U.S. Army in June 1943. He traveled to several other companies over his career in New Jersey, Chicago, and Salt Lake City. He served two LDS missions, the first to the New Mexico and with his wife in The Bronx, speaking Spanish. He was preceded in death by his wife, of 58 years, Lenna G. Long. He is survived by his children, David (LeeAnn) of Provo, Utah, Larry (Tracey) of Las Vegas, Lorinda of Las Vegas, Denice of Salt Lake City, and Deanne of Salt Lake City; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
