DR. ARTHUR RANDO-GRILLOT Arthur J. "Doc" Rando-Grillot, Jan. 23, 1910 - April 27, 2013. Born in New Orleans in 1910 and educated at the Samuel J. Peters Music School for Boys, Doc Rando left home at 17 to go on the road with Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra. He would go on to play saxophone and clarinet with some of the era's biggest bands and studio orchestras, performing and appearing on famous radio shows and movies. In the late 1950's, when big bands gave way to rock and roll, Doc exchanged his musical instruments for medical instruments, becoming a doctor. Doc became head of the ER at Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital, and a founder of the College of Emergency Room Physicians. Long-time friend and UNLV benefactor, Tom Beam, had a campus concert hall named for Doc. One of Doc's most treasured memories was celebrating his 100th birthday in this hall. Because of his many friends, and the lives that he touched and that touched him, Doc said his 103 years were like a wonderful spring afternoon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jonnie. He is survived by daughter, Carol Ann; his son, Jay; and their families, including grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and Indy, his friend and favorite snack companion. Memorial services are pending.
